The Holy Week in Ecuador is celebrated because of the yearly commemoration of the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. This celebration has a really strong connection with tradition, culture, and religion in the context of the festivities. The mixture of older indigenous traditions and adopted Catholic beliefs resulted in a unique local festivity filled with color, devotion and folklore.

The most relevant moment of the Holy Week is the “Jesus of Great Power Procession” in Quito. During the procession, there are around 1.000 cucuruchos, (men and women robed in dark purple tunics and pointy hats) ready to represent Jesus’ walk with the cross through the city of Jerusalem. The procession starts at midday after confessions and a mass for the people in the city. Sometimes it can have a dramatic tone to it, with some of the faithful carrying heavy wooden crosses along the streets among other similar depictions that become a part of the procession.

Alongside the importance and reverence of the event, there’s also the tradition of the typical famous meal during Holy Week. You will be able to savor a distinctive soup made with bacalao fish and 10 varieties of grains such as beans, chochos, corn, peas, porotos, rice, onions, garlic, cumin, achiote, peanuts, milk, cream and cheese. The tasting of this dish will be a unique experience as part of this journey in a beautiful local restaurant before returning to the hotel.
